December 30, 2008

Durga K. C.,who comes from a very disadvantaged family, was striving hard to make two end meal for her family of 5. Her driver husband's income was not sufficient to meet the daily requirements of her family. To support her two daughters' educational fees was another economic responsibility in her shoulder. Beside household chores, she was desperately looking for some opportunities so that she can earn some additional income to support her family requirements. Her dream comes closer to be true when Micro-Enterprise Development Programme introduced to her VDC (Maranthana) and identified her as one of the participants in the entrepreneurship development training organized in her village. She had also undertaken herbal soap making and gender sensitization training organized by MEDEP.

After training she started making herbal soap and selling the soap locally. This new enterprise gave her an income of about Rs. 4000 to 6000 a month and at the same time it gave her a strong motivation and encouragement to be a successful entrepreneur. Now she has decided to continue soap making enterprise as her main source of income to support her family's requirements. At present, Durga K. C. produces and sells five thousand soaps a month and makes a profit of Rs. ten thousand.

Durga K.C recalls the changes in her family status before and after her new soap making enterprise. She says, " there have been many changes in my family after I started making herbal soap and getting additional income from selling the soap. At present, my husband has stopped working as a driver and works together with me in producing soap. This has given us good income to send the children to school and meet the house expenditures. Now I realized that if we have skills we can earn". The successful entrepreneurship of Durga K.C. is not only changing her family life towards betterment but also inspires the fellow neighbors to follow her footsteps.

Besides Durga K. C., thousands of other poor and disadvantaged women and men in the rural communities have become entrepreneurs of various products and services with the support of Micro-Enterprise Development Programme.

Looking at the successful case of Durga K.C., it is evident that the entrepreneurship development efforts made by utilizing local capacity and resources can contribute poverty reduction of ultra poor and poor families considerably.
