December 30, 2008

Dhukheni Devi Chaudhari, a house wife and mother of four, comes from a poor farming family of Dumraha VDC of Sunsari District. She has a small piece of land for farming. The production of grains from that small land area was not enough to feed the family even for six months. Her husband and elder son work for other landlord after finishing their limited farm works. Dhukheni has some time spare after her household chores. She desperately wanted to do some thing income earning in the time left after finishing up her household chores. One day when she had been to VDC Office, she heard about Micro-enterprise Development Programme and its activities directed towards helping poor rural women and men to undertake enterprise and earn income for bette livelihoods.

Meanwhile, she managed to meet to MEDEP Enterprise Development Facilitator (EDF) Mr. Bashu Dev Uranwa and put her interest to do some thing as source of income. Since she was from the low income family, EDF Mr. Bashu Dev selected her as one of the participants in the entrepreneurship training organized by MEDEP in Sunsari. After the training she formed a Muda making enterprise group namely "Lakshmi Muda Enterprise Group". Dhukhani Devi already had some skills on Muda Making which helped her to lead the group. Now Dhukhini Devi and her group is producing Muda monthly and selling to nearby market places. According to her, there is a good demand for Muda made by her because of comparatively better quality of the product. Dhukani Devi said that she is very much encouraged because the customers prefer her Muda over others ones.

Dhukhani earns Rs. 4000 to 5000 a month by selling Muda. This earning has greatly contributed in improving her family's living condition. According to her the income she made fro Muda enterprise has been a great support to manage the expenses of her daughter's wedding. Now she is saving some amount out of her income for the wedding of her another daughter. She said that after she started getting additional income from Muda enterprise, she does not have to depend on her husband for any personal expenses instead her income has been a great support to meet the family's daily requirements.

Now Dhukhani is not only chairperson of Micro-entrepreneurs Group, and member of District Micro-entrepreneur Association but she is also a well known trainer of Muda enterprise in the district. She has also gained a lot of entrepreneurial experiences and skills through observation tours organized by MEDEP in the different part of the country. Dhukhani is also working as a social worker especially in raising awareness on health and sanitation sectors in her spare time taken out from her Muda enterprise.

"I strongly feel that my social status has been promoted after I established this Muda enterprise and started working as a trainer to train other Muda entrepreneurs of the neighboring villages" Dhukani proudely said.

Thus, Dhukani Devi has been an example for successful woman entrepreneur and a source of aspiration in her community.
