Honey

Honey has been used in religious ceremonies in Nepal for centuries, but its mortal pleasures as a tasty spread and cooking ingredient are a relatively modern trend. Even more recently, honey has become popular for its health benefits, which advocates say range from helping to alleviate bronchitis to soothing

burns.

Honey was traditionally gathered from hives of native bees in the cliffs of the Himalayan foothills and while this method of production is still used to harvest a premium product, most of Nepal’s honey production comes from cultivated hives of indigenous Apis Cerena bees in the hills and imported European Apis melifera bees in the Terai regions. Different types of honey are produced based on the seasons and blooming cycle of the various local floras that the bees feed on. The honey is extracted from the combs, pasteurised, filtered and packaged for the customer.

MEDEP is promoting honey producers in Dang, Darchula, Baitadi, Kailali, Dadeldhura, Parbat, Nawalparasi and Pyuthan, providing entrepreneurship and technical skills training, access to appropriate technology and equipment and help to improve the marketability of the product and build market linkages.

A variety of honey is available in both wholesale and retail quantities from Saugaat Griha, the sales outlet of

micro, cottage and small entrepreneurs’ products at Tripureshowar, Kathmandu.
